A year before I started high school, my dad and I joined the 10,000 other bikers on a week long ~500 mile bicycle ride across Iowa (www.ragbrai.org). Along the way, we came across various forms of entertainment. One town had a bicycling comedian performance that we went to. The guy bikes all over the country doing shows. He doesn't really live anywhere, doesn't have a family, and carries all his possesions with him on his bike. He's been in 48 states. At the end, he answered some of the audience's questions. After some of the silly and uninteresting questions (Which two states haven't you been in?), someone asked about his love life. He said he longs for the day when he'll be riding down the street and happen to meet a beautiful woman biking towards him. They'll realize they both bike around the country for a living and ride off together into the sunset. ^_^

I had that fantasy playing in my head today when I was walking home in the cool, damp air (my favorite weather). I imagined walking past someone humming the tune to Boy with the Violin, starting a conversation and finding out she was interested in music, in sweet romance, in the workings of the world, in computers, and was just completely compatible with me. We'd hug and walk off into the sunset (or chilly damp afternoon, as it were) and live happily ever after.

It gives me a warm feeling to think about. Mind, my head's not always in the clouds. I realize there are only a handful of people in my generation that know of the Boy with the Violin. I even realize that sort of perfection in just having all of our interests match up is not what I truly want. But it's still fun to think about.

As the bicycling comedian said, he realizes there's no hope for his woman biker fantasy. When he wants to be realistic, he just hopes a woman will drive up next to him and have a bike rack on the back of her car.
